Rewind: The Premature Title Celebrations at Kitende

SC Vipers are set to host Express on Friday at St Mary’s Stadium in a StarTimes Uganda Premier league.

This fixture revokes memories of premature title celebrations last year by Vipers.

On Tueaday, April 22 2018, the sides met with differing ambitions – Vipers wanted to seal the title with Victory if KCCA FC had failed to beat BUL, as Express FC wanted to win to improve their survival chances.

It was total disaster for the Visitors – Daniel Sserunkuma bagged an hat-trick against his former masters, Moses Waiswa and Duncan Sseninde got one each to complete the rout.

The match announcer at Kitende, Wycliffe Luyombya who was mis-informed, announced that the game at Lugogo between KCCA FC and BUL had ended one all, a result which would mean that the Venom had clinched the title.

The result at Lugogo would have given Vipers a 4 point lead ahead of the last game of the season.

Celebrations begun, and Da Costa was seen joining the players’ title celebrations on the pitch. Lawrence Mulindwa and Simon Ssekankya too, were seen in joy from the VIP box.

Later, news broke out that Derrick Nsibambi had won it for KCCA FC in added time – 2-1.

Vipers went on to win the title with a commanding 4-1 over UPDF at home, as KCCA FC were held 2-2 by Police FC at Namboole.

Also, Express FC managed to beat the drop with a hard fought 1-0 late win over Masavu FC in Entebbe, a feat which was boosted by Proline (who were relegated together with UPDF and Masavu) losing 1-2 to URA at Lugogo.
