Monday, March 1
Express FC 1-0 BUL FC

Brian Umony was the difference, scoring the lone goal in the second minute, as Express FC ousted BUL FC to reach the semi finals of the 2018/19 Stanbic Uganda Cup.

Umony who was part of the six new additions that joined the ten time winners in January window, bundled in Frank Zaga Tumwesigye’s beautiful delivery, as goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo remained rooted on the line.

In a less eventful game, both sides looked blunt with the visitors’ only threats coming from set pieces – Striker Kamabale Muhindo trying various rockets but all off the target.

The Red Eagles join Bright Stars and Kyetume FC who eliminated Nebbi Central and Wakiso Giants respectively. Vipers visit Proline on Tuesday at Lugogo in the last quarter finals game.

Express FC target Record Eleventh Title

Express FC won their first Uganda Cup trophy way back in 1985 when they beat up on KCC 3-1. They have won nine more titles since, totaling to ten, level on top with KCCA against SC Villa’s nine.

With the two rivals, defending Champions KCCA and Villa out, the Wankulukuku based side will fancy a chance to clinch this year’s crown.

They have not been convincing this season especially going forward but they have proved to be a hard side to crack for starters thanks to John Revita, Arthur Kiggundu, Charles Musoke and Isaac Mutanga who have been industrious at the back.

In 2017, Express was ousted by KCCA FC with a 3-1 aggregate victory at the semis.

“I know the Uganda Cup, I have won it as a player (captain) and I want to give a go at it as a coach,” said George Ssemwogerere after the game. “Am happy with the victory and hopefully we can continue with such hard work.”

Express are ninth on the log in the league with 29 points – They can no longer win the league or get relegated in normal circumstances as it stands, so, their season success will mostly be judged by how far they have gone in the Uganda Cup.

It should be remembered that the winner of the Uganda Cup earns a ticket to represent Uganda in the CAF Confederations Cup.
