ASEC (CIV) Vs Nkumba (UGA)
Uganda’s sole representatives at the 2019 Africa Women Club Championship Nkumba University Volleyball Club will seek to get off the mark when they face Ivory Coast’s ASEC Mimosas on Saturday.
Nkumba who are the reigning Uganda National Volleyball League (Women) champions will be hoping to reach the knock out stages of the competitions that serve off on March 16 to March 25 in Cairo, Egypt.
Nkumba, taking part in the continental competition for their third time, left Uganda on Wednesday, and had held their preparations in Italy in their bid to prove their mettle.
The side, coached by Tony Lakony, are in the tourney’s group of Death – Pool D with former Champions Kenya Prisons, El Shams (Egypt), GSP (Algeria) and ASEC of Ivory Coast.
Kenya Prisons will be favourites to top Pool D, they have won the title five times, including three times in a row from 2010-2013.
Nkumba Seek To Improve
Last year, still in Cairo, Nkumba finished ninth overall out of the 19 teams that took part. The side had finished third in a tough Pool A that had eventual winners Al Ahly.
Nkumba managed to beat ASEC, this year’s opponent, 3-0 in one of their placement games.
“Last year we made a mark, and so we want to make it better,” said Astreede Agaba, a player for Nkumba before the team left.
“We don’t want to be only champions in Uganda, but we want to prove our worth at the Continent. The competition will be tough, but we will do our best because we are well prepared.”
Emily Kansiime also echoed the words of hope, adding that they have the size and are not scared of anyone.
The team comprises of 12 players and four officials.
