Cricket: Baby Cricket Cranes Flagged Off To Namibia

Uganda’s U19 Boys Cricket team, the Baby Cricket Cranes, have been flagged off to Windhoek, Namibia.

The team is set to take part in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Africa U-19 World Cup Qualifier (Div. I).

The boys will be in pursuit to secure a lone ticket to the World Cup due in South Africa next year.

The tournament is scheduled to take place from March 15-24 in Windhoek, Namibia. The winner of the six-nation showpiece will secure the ticket to Rainbow Nation.

The team’s captain Frank Akankwasa and vice-captain Zephaniah Arinaitwe spent five weeks at the ICC High Performance Centre in Potchefstroom, South Africa harnessing their skills whereas coach Jackson Ogwang had a rare opportunity of touring with six others to the Sanjay Farm in Chikhli, South Gujarat for a 21-day boot camp.

“We want to do well and become the third ever Uganda U-19 side to qualify for the World Cup,” Akankwasa said while hinting on the 2004 and 2006 sides that took part in the Bangladesh and Sri Lanka editions.

“We want to make our country proud. We have talent but we must execute now.”

National Council of Sports have supported this particular cause as they offered UCA – Uganda Shillings 25 Million – to help with the teams preparation and other logistics during the tournament.
