Uganda Crested Cranes 2-1 Kampala Region Select
Uganda’s senior women’s team, the Crested Cranes were unconvincing in their victory against a Kampala region select team.
Farida Bulega’s charges squeezed a 2-1 win against a resolute Ayub Khalifa’s side, in the first Women region tour match.
Playing against an inferior side, the Cranes failed to show the gap in quality on pitch as the National side proved wasteful and lacked cohesion going forward.
Kawempe Moslem’s Anita Namata gave the Cranes a 27th minute lead, beating keeper Akujo Esther with pace.
Sophia Nakiyingi levelled matters from the spot – Cranes’ Nankya Shadia had tripped Regina Nantege in the forbidden area – scoring with a beautiful shot at the far post.
Cranes made all but overhaul changes in the squad that played the second stanza, with only Shadia Nankya and Kampala Queens’ Aisha Namukisa retained.
With fresh legs, Cranes dominated proceedings with Fauziah Najjemba denied by the crossbar on three different occasions.
Lillian Mutuzo orchestrated Cranes’ attacks from the right flank but the side failed to break through. Mutuzo was fouled in the area but Zainah Namuleme had his penalty kick saved.
Resty Nanziri later found what proved to be the winner for the national side, when he directed a powerful effort into the top corner that almost protruded through the net at Lugogo.
