Vipers suffered a shock 1-2 defeat against URA FC in a StarTimes Uganda Premier league game played at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.

Vipers knew a win was necessary to give themselves a chance of keeping their own league title hopes alive after recent setbacks that had seen the club draw their last two games.

Shafic Kagimu fired in the opener from outside the box in the 26th minute as the tax collectors took halftime bragging rights.

The Venoms were forced into two early changes – Hamis Diego Kiiza and Ibrahim Tembo replaced Bobosi Byaruhanga and Tom Masiko respectively but Nam Ouma’s side continued to look the second best.

URA’s Victor Kilama tapped in from close range to double the advantage at the hour mark.

Vipers halved the deficit four minutes later from the spot after Kenyan import Innocent Wafula was brought down in the forbidden area for Diego Hamis to score on second attempt.

Vipers, who suffered their third loss of the campaign, had two late chances to level matters but Sseninde’s effort went wide while Taddeo Lwanga’s header off Brian Nkuubi’s cross was kept out by James Alitho.

The result, a reminiscent of last year’s when the two teams met at Kitende, leaves Vipers six points below leaders KCCA with three games to go. KCCA have a game in hand against Express at Lugogo on Saturday.

Next for Mulindwa’s franchise are two back to back away trips to Police and Paidha before closing the season at Kitende against BUL.

Vipers who now take four points off Vipers in total this season after sharing spoils in the reverse fixture, remain third with 46 points but four below Vipers.
