UPL: Express FC Humbles Bright Stars For Tenth Victory

Express FC made light work of Bright Stars in a league game played at Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku.

The Red Eagles won 3-1 to record their tenth league win from 29 attempts. Express has lost ten and drawn nine games.

Debutant Sadiq Ssekyembe contributed an hat-trick of assists with Ibrahim Kayiwa, Ivan Ocholit and Tony Odur at the receiving end.

Bright Stars brought one back courtesy of an own goal from defender Hamisi Batega but that was only they managed to offer on the day.

Express will visit Onduparaka on May 4 for their last league game while Bright Stars will be in Mwererwe to entertain relegated Paidha Paidha Angels on the same day.

Both teams will meet again on Thursday, May 9 at Wankulukuku for the return leg of the Uganda Cup semifinals. The teams shared spoils in a one all draw.

New Looking Faces

Express made almost overhaul changes from the team that drew 1-1 in Uganda Cup – only John Revita, Mathias Muwanga and Pius Mbidde made the starting lineup.

Ivan Ocholit, Hamis Batega and Sadiq Ssekyembe where given their first starts of the season.

Express head coach George Ssimwogerere made 8 changes from the team that played against Bright Stars on Sunday in the Stanbic Uganda Cup semifinal first leg at Mwererwe leaving only captain John Revita, goalkeeper Mathias Muwanga and midfielder Pius Mbidde.

He handed first starts to Ivan Ocholit, Hamis Batega and Sadiq Ssekyembe. The latter went on to assist all the three goals we scored in the match.

In what expected to be a pulsating affair, Ibrahim Kayiwa managed to settle nerves when he headed in from Ssekyembe’s cross.

Ocholit doubled the advantage from Ssekyembe’s lofty corner before Tony Odur directed in from Ssekyembe’s freekick.

This was a statement victory against a team they will face in the crunch Uganda Cup semi, with a winner looking to pose an upper hand in the final as the other semi has big league sides Proline and Kyetume FC.

The win lifts Express to 39 points, one above Fred Kajoba’s Bright Stars.

Elsewhere:

Ndejje – Onduparaka game was interrupted by heavy rainfall and will be replayed on Thursday at 2:00 PM, Bombo.

Brian Nkuubi’s 18th minute strike was enough to give Vipers maximum points away to Paidha BA.

Cromwell Rwothomio scored a brace, a goal from each half, as URA FC beat Police FC at Lugogo.

Champions elect KCCA FC won 2-0 away to Nyamityobora courtesy if Patrick Kaddu’s double. Nicholas Kasozi was sent off late in the game.
