Uganda’s senior national women’s basketball team, the Gazelles had a mixed start at the ongoing 2019 FIBA 3X3 World Cup Qualifiers.

Uganda, clearly looking jet lagged, struggled against the 2018 Asia Cup bronze medalists with plenty of misplaced passes.

It was a close contest at the start but the Aussies’ quality of Alice Kunek, Bec Cole, Marena Whittle and Keely Froling surfaced at the expense of Uganda’s failed attempts.

In the second game, Uganda came out big to destroy the Estonia team in a statement victory against a 6th ranked side.

Rita Imanishimwe put up strong performances with 10 points in total, in both games. Claire Lamunu has five while Jamila ‘Zama’ Nansikombi and Sarah Ageno has so far four points each.

Uganda, second on the log, Pool A, behind leaders Australia, will face hosts Puerto Rico on Sunday – The last group game.

Other encounters in Pool A saw Australia remain unbeaten after beating Puerto Rico 21-4. The hosts had beaten up on Estonia 14-11.

None of the participating teams have been eliminated so far after day but action returns on Sunday with a FIBA 3X3 World Cup ticket still at stake.

It should be noted that the top three teams at the tournament out of eight (women teams) will reach the glamorous World Cup.
