Warriors fought back to claim a 68-66 win over six time defending champions City Oilers in a National Basketball League thriller played at MTN Indoor Arena in Lugogo.

The Kyambogo based team came big in the last quarter to limit Oilers to just nine points, as they put up 21 at the other end of the court to seal a hard fought win.

Mark Opiyo led the way with 18 points, Chris Omanye had 10 points and four assits. Stanley Mugerwa contributed a double double of ten points and 11 rebounds.

James Okello (21) and Landry Ndikumana (15) were the only Oilers players to reach double figures. Okello added 12 rebounds to his tally but the contribution proved not enough to stop Warriors.

Ronnie Mutebi’s charges go joint top with five wins from as many games while Oilers suffer their second loss after going down to UCU canons 82-90 on Sunday.

Oilers will look to bounce back when they face JKL Dolphins on May 15 while Warriors will have no time to rest, retuning on court against Falcons on May 12.

Warriors Show Resilience

City Oilers got off to a bright start when they led 21-15 after the first quarter but the introduction of Jonathan Kambala for Warriors will go down as the turning point.

The new signing was everywhere on court, despite his shot being off on the day, going 2/13 on the field, his defence and ball supply inside the opponent’s half was key.

Warriors won the second quarter 17-13 to reduce the deficit to two points (32-34) going into the long break but Oilers, behind good displays from James Okello saw Oilers lead by ten points going into the last quarter.

Jonathan Kambale scored from beyond the arc, Mike Othieno converted a jumper before Chris Omanye finished his drive and fast forward, the gap was cut to two points with three minutes still on the clock.

Deng Maker made a big three and could later add another lay up to give Warriors a three point cushion with just a minute on the clock.

Kambala was sent on the line after a foul by Drilleba and the Congolese made one of the two free throws to extend Warriors lead to four points.

Jimmy Enabu scored from downtown as Oilers brought the game to just a point with 23 seconds on the clock, but a late Oilers foul saw Mark Opiyo make one of his two free throws for Warriors to seal a two point game.
