Players Abroad: Onyango Reflects On Winning League On Last Day

Uganda’s captain Denis Masinde Onyango has shown his delight after helping Mamelodi Sundowns to a ninth league triumph in the South African Premier League (PSL).

Onyango was outstanding while in goal as Sundowns picked a needed win against Free State Stars on the road on Saturday, May 11 to clinch the title. The result consequently relegated the hosts.

While on TV interview with Supersport after the game, Onyango commented:

“We knew how tough this will be, we came here at Goble park for a win, but it was never easy although we have been getting wins here recently.

“The hosts also wanted the game to beat relegation but we wanted it more to confirm our championship victory as well. We had to win and leave the rest to PSL.”

This was Sundowns’ ninth league title, and third with Onyango who joined the side in 2011.

Sundowns won 1-0 on the road with Phakamani Mahlambi scoring the only goal of the game just before halftime.

“It has been a very tough campaign for us after playing so many matches,” Onyango added. “I had to play to my best as we knew what was at stake for our opponents too. I was certain of us scoring so I had to also keep a scoring sheet for my side who have been there for me this all season.”

The league title is also the sixth for Onyango in South African League. He had won three with Super Sport United as well.

Six league titles and still counting

It should be noted that Onyango and Sundowns needed victory on the last day of the season to confirm themselves as PSL winners on the last day of the league after huge pressure from rivals Orlando Pirates who finished in second with two points adrift, with 57 points.

Onyango will be very title for Uganda’s Africa Cup of Nations adventure in Egypt later in June where the Cranes are in group with hosts, DR Congo and Zimbabwe.
