Uganda’s senior men National Cricket team, the Cricket Cranes, got off a perfect start in the ICC T20 World Cup Africa Final qualifying tournament.

The hosts cheered on by a sizeable crowd at Lugogo Cricket Oval and led by Roger Mukasa won by 52 runs.

Arnold Otwani hit 44 runs with six boundaries off 27 balls. Opener Hamu Kayondo managed 30 while Riazat Ali Sha garnered 24 as the boys posted 142 runs for the fall of seven wickets.

Captain Roger Mukasa

Charles Waiswa and Frank Nsubuga picked two wickets each as Tikolo’s side limited Botswana to 90 runs all out.

“It has been a big win for us,” said Captain Mukasa. “We needed it to give ourselves a rhythm ahead of the coming days.

“We just have to bat better in our next games because its the only side which we are still lacking. We have to get good runs, and I trust my boys can do good in fielding.”

The tournament was initially supposed to bowl off on Sunday but the three scheduled games were abandoned due to rain related reasons. Day one games were pushed to Wednesday.

Uganda will now face tournament favourites Namibia on Tuesday at Kyambogo oval.

Botswana who came in the tournament as Southern region champions, won the toss and chose to field first, a decision which could later turn out to be the best for Uganda.

Despite an early struggle that saw early Uganda lose two wickets, Zephaniah Arinaitwe and Roger Mukasa, the side managed to elevate from 19/2 to 84/3 thanks to Arnold Otwani’s heroics with the bat.

The six teams will be contesting for one of two spots that are available for further qualification to the Global Qualifiers, which will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in October/November 2019.
