Cricket T20 Africa: Uganda’s Riazat Named Best Batsman As Namibia, Kenya Advance

Uganda’s Riazat Ali Shah was named as the best Batsman at the concluded 2019 ICC T20 World Cup regional finals held in Kampala.

The colourful closing ceremony was held at Kabira Country club on Friday evening Present were participating teams, officials from ICC Africa, National Council of Sports, Uganda Cricket Association and members of the press.

Beside the huge crowds that watched the games, Riazat’s achievement is something to smile for, despite a disappointing performance by the hosts.

Riazat who vies his trade with Aziz Damani Cricket club, finished with most runs, 140 in the four matches.

He scored 24 off 21 as Uganda had a good start to beat Botswana by 52 runs. He had four boundaries in his 19 in loss against Botswana, totalled 53 off 36 against Ghana. He contributed 44 off 35 in a game Uganda lost to Kenya by just one run.

He hit eight boundaries and eight sixes in his four innings.

It should be noted that Riazat, Pakistani born, was also the MVP in 2018 regional meet in Rwanda where Uganda finished second behind Kenya.

Namibia’s Christie Vijleon and Kenya’s Rakeep Patel were named best bowler and MVP respectively.

The tournament in Kampala which had five games abandoned, had Namibia and Kenya, earn the two slots for the 2019 ICC World Cup Qualifier set in UAE in October/November.

The two, Namibia and Kenya, will compete with other countries like Scotland, Zimbabwe, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Oman, Ireland, UAE and other four counties ( 1 Europe, 1 Asia and 2 from Americas – will be determined in qualifiers) for slots to the 2020 ICC T20 World Cup set in Australia.
