NCS Flags Off Volleyball Cranes Amidst Financial Hardships

Uganda senior Men Volleyball team’s chances of reaching the All Africa Games finals in Morocco hang in balance as they are set to leave for the Zone Five qualifiers in Nairobi, Kenya with a sad face.

The team needed 12000 dollars, with the accommodation projected at $700 (50 dollars per person per day for 20 people for 7 days). However, the main stakeholder which is Government has contributed Sh7M which is just 15% of the required figure.

“We have managed Sh7M and wish the best to the team,” said NCS’ Fred Katende during a flag off on Friday afternoon at Lugogo.

“This team will be able to perform. I have confidence that they will put up a good challenge. Let the action speak for ourselves and let’s die for our country.”

The Federation’s president Hadija Namanda thanked National Council for the contribution but revealed that they will continue to solicit for more funds between now and until tomorrow. The team is expected to leave on Saturday by road before facing giants Egypt on Monday in the opener.

Namanda, who looked stressed, revealed that in case the funds don’t come out as expected, the team will be trimmed to fit the available budget.

The women’s team lost their berth to Kenya in the recently concluded qualifiers held in the country at the Indoor Arena, and the Men’s team carry the hopes.

Uganda will face Egypt, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania among other zone five countries with just one slot at stake.

“We will try to do our best to see that we make the country proud,” coach Andrew Okapis told this website. “Much as there are are financial hardships, the mood in the camp has been high. I will try to divert my players’ attention from the financial issues and we try to focus on the game itself.”

The team will be captained by George Aporu and assisted by Daudi Okello ahead of what now looks like a Mission impossible.
