Uganda’s junior teams recorded mixed results at the ongoing FIBA Africa U16 Zone five Championship against Rwanda in Kigali.

The Girls extended their strong start with comeback victory before Rwanda revenged on the Boys with a blowout defeat.

Coming into the game on the back of a 58-39 victory against Tanzania, the Junior Gazelles managed to overcome hosts Rwanda and seal a second win from as many games and lighten their qualification chances.

Rwanda Girls led 33-29 at the long break but Uganda came out of the blocks to win 13-9 and 21-13 in the third and fourth quarter respectively to win 63-55.

Maria Najjuma flipped the switch to register a monstrous double double of 31 points and 36 rebounds, shooting 14-31 from the field.

Regina Ajuna and Shilla Lamunu scored 11 points each in game 28-94 from the field and out rebounded Rwanda 75-60. Ajuna added 12 rebounds to her good tally.

In the Boys game, Rwanda were unforgiving as they made light work of the junior Silverbacks to win 96-36.

Uganda only managed six and five points in the first and second quarter in that order to trail 51-11 at halftime and couldn’t crawl back before losing a 60 point game.

Jonathan Kasilimbi, scored 10 points, was the only Uganda player to reach double figures. Joseph Lokol and Joseph Angucu managed six points each in a losing effort.

The teams – Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda – are fighting for a single ticket (one each for boys and girls) to the 2019 FIBA Africa U16 Championship.
