Hosts Egypt got off a perfect start at the 32nd edition of Africa Cup of Nations, beating Zimbabwe 1-0 in a game played at a packed 75000 Cairo International Stadium.

Egypt found a hero not through Mohammed Salah, but Mohammed ‘Trezeguet’ Hassan who slotted home with a shot at far post in the 42nd minute to send the home fans into wild celebrations.

The Warriors who chased the ball for the rest of the minutes, as expected, failed to put up a formidable challenge going forward.

Kharma Biliat threatened on occasions but couldn’t find a break through a tight defence that had Hegazi while Ovidy Karuru shot direct at the goalkeeper down the stretch.

Salah, fans favourite, was Egypt’s architect despite being surrounded by Zimbabwe for much of the time. The Liverpool ace had chances with the keeper but denied on several occasions.

The Pharaohs lead pool A with three points before Uganda and DR Congo face off on Saturday.
