Uganda women managed to overcome Rwanda but the Men lost to Kenya as the 2019 FIBA Africa Zone Five Championship got underway at the Indoor Arena in Lugogo, Kampala.

The Silverbacks shot an ugly 22 of 76 from the field in a 61-70 loss to Kenya in the last game of the day.

Brandon Davies played 37 minutes, scored a double double of 15 points and 21 rebounds in a losing effort for the Silverbacks.

Action between Uganda (Red) and Rwanda.

Robinson Opong and Tonny Drilleba reached 12 and 11 points respectively but the rest of the supporting cast failed to join the party especially John Deng Geu who shot 3/15.

Kenya bossed with size and frustrated George Galanopoulos’ troops from start to finish in a game Uganda trailed by 17 points at one stage.

Tylar Okari (19), Tom Bush Wamukota (18) and Erick Reuben Mutoro (12) scored double figures for the Morans who were never intimidated of Uganda’s vocal supporters at a sale-out arena.

The Women team, Gazelles, fought back to beat Rwanda 62-53 in a laboured victory. Claire Lamunu weighed in with a team high 14 points, while Brenda Ekone and Zainah Lokwameri added 10 and 11 points respectively.

Tierra Monay Henderson scored 28 points for Rwanda in a losing effort.

Felmas Adhiambo Koranga scored 24 points in Kenya (Women) 82-86 loss to Egypt.

Serbian Vladimir Bosnjak’s Rwanda lost 68-59 to tournament favourites Egypt (Men).
