Uganda picked a hard earned point against Zimbabwe to edge closer to the knockout stage in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Emmanuel Okwi put the Cranes in the lead when Zim’s goalkeeper spilled Abdul Lumala’s shot in Okwi’s path to slot home the opener.

Khama Billiat levelled matters after a beautiful build up before beating Denis Onyango at close range before the end of first half.

“It was a difficult game for us,” admitted Cranes coach Sebastien Desabre. “They had one day to rest as they played Egypt (on Friday) before we faced DR Congo (on Saturday).”

“Zimbabwe played good, they had good combinations and were more organised. We didn’t have Murushid Juuko because he was feeling pain. May be he could have helped us in soaking the pressure.”

Hosts Egypt beat DR Congo in the other group A encounter to reach knockout and leave the latter packing.

Liverpool danger man Mo Salah got his name on the score sheet after Ahmed Elmohamady had put Egypt in the lead.

Uganda fall to second place with four points, two below leaders Egypt. The cranes will need a point off Egypt in the last game on June 30 but can seal their place if Zimbabwe fail to beat DR Congo.

In the first game of the day, Nigeria reached the knockout stage thanks to a late Kenneth Omeruo goal in the 73rd minute to ensure a 1-0 win over Guinea.
