Prisoners Renovating Maroons Stadium To Admirable Standards

Uganda Premier League side Maroons FC have embarked on renovating their home stadium ahead of the season kickoff.

The stadium that is located within Luzira Maximum Security Prison has been fenced off and inside works have started on the playing surface and the perimeter wall as well.

Talking with the club’s chief executive officer (CEO) who doubles as a prisons officer Shaban Ondoa confirmed the developments and said:

“This coming season,” Ondoa started. “We want to improve everything about the club and one of them is the stadium. With this we want to improve the playing surface, perimeter fence and also put up a pavilion.”

Ondoa also noted that he wants the stadium to reach CAF standards so as they can house it to various clubs in a bid to bring revenue into the club.

Inmates Doing The Work

The Club is benefiting from the free labour –
Inmates who were seen doing the work especially digging up holes and also leveling the ground.

In the concluded 2018/19 season, the 54 year old club survived relegation last season by a whisker after finishing 13th with 33 points.

However, in that season, they managed to get their first ever shirt sponsor since 1960.

After parting ways with experienced coach George ‘Best’ Nsimbe midway last season, the club is expected to find hard times given the fact that over 12 players are rumored to be on a verge of leaving the club yet no major signing has been done.
