AFCON: Obua Applauds Great Leader Onyango, Uganda Cranes

Uganda Cranes former star David Obua was all praise for his former team mate Denis Masinde Onyango despite Uganda falling 1-0 to Senegal to bow out of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Obua, while appearing on SuperSport TV also praised Uganda in general who was playing at the AFCON knockout stage for the first time since 1978.

Senegal, bossing with foreign based stars led by Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, Everton’s Idrissa Gaba Gueye and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibally, laboured to a hard fought victory against an inexperienced Uganda Cranes side.

“They played with tenacity, they came out here and competed, they did not sit back and defend. They had a physical encounter today,” said Obua.

“The decision making in this tournament was poor, you make an error you get punished and that is what happened to us. Thanks to the guys, they played well. And we are so proud of them.”

The comments, untypical of a controversial star, were supported by fellow panelist and Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Masimone.

Its should be remembered that in last AFCON engagement, Obua, via his Twitter handle blasted the team when he described Milutin Sredejovich Micho (Cranes coach then) team as playing street football.

On his former team mate at the national team, Onyango, he said:

“We have such a great goalkeeper, a great leader. He got away with that penalty incident foul but made a brilliant save to keep us in the game. That is the time when you need your protagonist in the game. Though other players must have come into play and help him out.”

Despite getting less trouble as it was expected to be from the Senegal team, Onyango managed to show the world why he is regarded as the best African player playing on the continent.

He picked a yellow card very early in the game but managed to remain composed. He came out for the second time, in the 35th minute out of his box to deny Niang when he poked his boot to clear away the ball for a corner.
