Batambuze’s Gor Mahia Set To Miss CAF Champions League

Kenyan Premier league giants Gor Mahia are set to miss out on CAF Champions League next season due to financial constraints, reports suggest.

Gor, is the home to Uganda Cranes defender Shafic Batambuze. They recently released former Vipers midfielder Erisa Ssekisambu.

This follows the recent government order on Wednesday last week to shutdown betting firm of their main sponsor Sportpesa.

The Kenyan Ministry of Interior suspended licenses of 27 betting firms from operating in the country saying they had not met outstanding renewal requirements and therefore their licences had not been renewed.

Club Chairman, Ambrose Rachier who this year hinted on the club’s plans to build a stadium, said that Government’s ban leaves Gor’s chances of taking part in the CAF Champions league in jeopardy.

“It is doom and gloom. It is our prayer that the standoff between the government and betting firms is resolved amicably,” Rachier, as quoted by Kenyan press.

“Of course we understand the position of the government, but whatever action they take they should also consider the sports industry. SportPesa and other betting companies have invested millions of shillings.”

It should be noted that Gor Mahia, current KPL Champions with 17 titles, are set to meet KCCA FC in the CECAFA Kagame Cup semifinals if they beat Green Eagles in Wednesday’s quarters.

Sportpesa, last year, announced a three year deal worth Kenyan Sh682M with Kenyan Premier League, Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.

Gor Mahia have participated in the CAF Champions league five times since 2014. Last year, after bowing out of the elite club continent competition, they played in CAF Confederation cup where they lost 2-0 to RS Berkene.
