Uganda She Cranes’ hopes of reaching the 2019 Netball World Cup semifinals have been blown after a 67-40 defeat by African power house South Africa on Wednesday.

The victory sends South Africa’s SPAR Proteas into the semis from group G alongside leaders England.

It was a close start but South Africa managed to take a 19-10 lead but Uganda narrowed the gap at one stage but failed to minimise errors.

Stella Oyella continued her imoressive form at the ongoing tourney, on a day that Peace Proscovia looked off colour. Maryka Holzhausen and Lenize Potgieter taunted Uganda at the other end to help South Africa achieve a laboured win.

The defeat sends Uganda to fourth position with four points, level with Jamaica with just one game to go.

“We are going to come back strong, we are playing Jamaica tomorrow,” Assistant coach Nelson Bogere said on TV.

“It wasn’t an easy game, we lost track in the middle. We kept changing the combination, but in vain.”

She Cranes, world number six, will face Sunshine girls of Jamaica.

It will be a huge task to ask She cranes a win off Jamaica, but an upset against world number two would not only be a remarkable highlight in this tournament but also a huge positive result to take back home.

After game with Jamaica, Uganda will play placement games due on Friday and Saturday before finals on 21st July, 2019.

This is the 3rd time Uganda is competing in Netball world cup, first appeared in 1979 in Trinidad & Tobago where it finished 13th, they again went back after 36 years in 2015 in Sydney Australia where they finished 8th.
