CECAFA: Outspoken Secretary General Musonye Confirms Exit

Long serving Council for East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) secretary general Nicholas Musonye has confirmed that he will step down after 20 years in charge.

The Kenyan, who was voted as secretary general in 2000, will officially step down in June 2020, an exclusive story in Daily Nation (Kenya) has revealed.

“I leave CECAFA in good hands and request those who will take over to continue organising tournaments and showcasing talent,” Musonye said.

Regarded by many as a motormouth, Musonye is an aggressive talker and recently slammed Gor Mahia coach Hassan Oktay for disrespecting the concluded 2019 CECAFA Kagame Cup following the coach’s remarks about not being under pressure when playing the regional club event.

Musonye confirmed that he will be joining politics:

“It’s been twenty years since. A lot has happened. have gathered a lot of experience, exposure and contacts around the world over the past two decades, and would wish to share most of it with my people in Kakamega while serving as their governor. I am certain they will give me the opportunity,” Musonye added.

Musonye leaves the CECAFA regional with some improvements, especially after seeing the region take four teams – Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi – at the 2019 AFCON.

However, the football standards in the region is still low especially with club football. CECAFA tournaments have also become a laughing stalk with clubs failing to honour their participation due to low prize fee among others.

The body is made up of 12 member football associations – Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zanzibar.

In his spell as secretary general, he has served under five elected CECAFA presidents including the late Ugandan Denis Obua.
