Kickboxing: Kenyan Throws In Towel As Apolot Triumph

On a very cold Saturday night in Kireka, a suburb on the outskirts of Kampala, kickboxing fans stormed Smiles corner to witness the duel between Kenyan Joyce Awino and Uganda’s Patricia Apolot

In what was dubbed as the “The revelation fight of a thousand punches”, the African WKF title in light welter weight was at stake.

Awino started strong, throwing punches and kicks that landed on Apolot who had won the first fight earlier in the year in Tororo.

In the second round Apolot came very strong and landed several punches and kicks that threw Awino on the canvas.

In the second minute of the third round, Awino’s seconders threw in a white towel, a sign of conceding defeat after their fighter failed to control Apolot who had turned into a ‘beast’.

The victory was welcomed by frenzy celebrations from Apolot fans, many of them cames from Eastern Uganda were she is the ambassador for kickboxing.

One of them was Lt. Gen peter Elwelu who is the commander of the land forces.

“I didn’t expect this fight to be this tough, she (Awino) threw hard punches to me but I stayed committed until I got this sweet win,” noted Apolot.

Apolot also added that she will be having various activations in the Eastern part of the country in the name of promoting the sport in districts of Kumi, Soroti, Mbale among others.

She also said she will be having a fight in Hungary before this year ends

There were several undercards, but the most anticipated one saw Uganda’s James Owara beat Kenyan Othieno Micheal by a technical knockout.
