COSAFA U17: Late Keeper Howler Denies Uganda Dream Start

Uganda and Zambia shared spoils in the opening game of the 2019 COSAFA U17 Women Championship in Mauritius.

Ayub Khalifa coached Uganda team could have won the game but a late Daphine Nayenga howler gifted Zambia a laboured point.

Uganda Martyr’s Nayenga, who had had a good day, fumbled with a stinging shot from Shelly Masumo in the 83rd minute before the ball found the back of the net for the Young Shepolopolo to level matters.

Uganda had taken a deserved lead with Captain Juliet Nalukenge scoring from the spot after Kevin Nakachwa was brought down in the box just after the hour mark.

Goalkeeper Nyayenga had earlier kept Uganda into the game, denying Precious Nsama and keepong out Esther Sianfuko’s freekick.

Uganda’s Stella Musibika hit her free kick over the bar, while Fauzia Najjemba and Zaitun Namaganda also missed chances.

Uganda and Zambia’s Young Shepolopolo are now joint top with a point each before Mauritius face Comoros in the other group A game.

Uganda will return to action against Mauritius on September 22 before Comoros two days later. The top two teams in a two-group tourney advance to the semis.
