COSAFA U17: Uganda Crowned Champions

Uganda, guest nation, stunned odds to clinch the 2019 COSAFA U17 championship.

The Ayub Khalifa coached side beat South Africa 2-1 in the finals played on Sunday.

Second half goals from Fauzia Najjemba and captain Juliet Nalukenge gave the team needed victory at the inaugural tourney.

Uganda, having scored 20 past Zambia in the semi-finals, came geared up and had numerous attacks but the south African goalkeeper Karabo Mohale had a busy first half denying Nalukenge and Najjembe various opportunities.

Najjemba got Uganda’s opener in the 56th minute after donkey work from Nalukenge who was later denied by woodwork.

Tiffany Korjtile headed in Jessica Wade’s cross from the left flank after winning possession from Patricia Akiror to level matters.

Nalukenge led a counter attack from the center mark, played a one two with a speeding Najjembe, before firing in a late winner.

Nalukenge finish the tourney as the topscorer with 18 goals in a tourney Uganda scored 34 goals.

Daphine Nyayenge clinched the golden glove for the best goalkeeper of the tournament after conceeding only two goals while her close competitor from south Africa Mahole swallowed four.

South African Jessica wade walked away with the golden ball – she also had four goals to her name in the tournament.
