New Uganda Cranes coach Jonathan Mckinstry got off the mark with a 1-0 win away to Ethiopia in an international friendly played on Saturday.

Al Ittihad striker Emmanuel Okwi planted a header home off Joseph Ochaya’s delivery in the 20th minute to hand Mckinstry his first win on his debut as Cranes coach.

“Very pleased for all the players, staff and officials to secure a 1-0 away win over Ethiopia to kick-start the next phase of development for the Uganda Cranes,” tweeted the Irishman.

“It is only the beginning, but together we have taken the first steps on the journey together.”

The Cranes will touch base at Entebbe International airport on Monday evening, but most players are expected to connect direct with their clubs – Mckinstry is expected to join the CHAN team which started training on Sunday ahead of Saturday return leg against Burundi.
