Prior to the World Cup, Uganda had played four friendlies with Zimbabwe Gems at the Allen VR Stanley Arena in Nakirebe, Masaka road this year. Uganda won 57-53, 57-53, 58-48 and 58-54.

However, much has changed since.

Racheal Nanyonga, Lilian Ajio and Namuwaya Muhayimuna are not part of the team as well despite being integral in the World Cup.

Mary Nuba Cholock and Stella Oyella will carry Uganda’s hopes going to a tourney where hosts South Africa are outright favourites.

Coached by Lloyd Makunde and Captained by Perpetual Siyachitema, the Gems, finished eighth on their World Cup debut and will seek to defy odds in South Africa.

Uganda will also face neighbours Tanzania and Kenya in group B.
