Uganda’s representatives at this year’s FIBA Zone Five Women Cup, JKL Lady Dolphins, face Tanzania’s Jeshi la Kujenga Taifa (JKT) at 8PM in Dar.

The teams are fighting to qualify for the 2019 FIBA Africa Women’s Champions Cup, a premier event for Women’s club basketball in Africa, slated for December 6-15 in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Two slots in Dar for the finals in Madagascar are up for grabs.

This is the first time that JKL will be playing in the Zone five competition – They won their first NBL title last year on their debut appearance in the finals.

Last year’s champions Equity Bank and beaten finalists KPA will be top favourites once again. Equity are in Pool B alongside Gazzels, APR and Don Bosco.

JKL boosted their squad with Zainah Lokwameri, Brenda Ekone, Sarah Ageno and Rose Akon.

“As an individual, I am excited to have this chance once again,” said Zainah. “The mood in the camp is great and we are ready to hustle.”

“There is a great chance for the team to go a distance because we have good personnel but we have to believe in ourselves most importantly.”

Zainah, just like Akon and Ageno were part of UCU team that came third last year in the Zone five and their experience at this stage will be vital.

The Lady Dolphins will be coached by City Oilers’ Mandy Juruni and will not be part of Oilers’ team that returns in the country on Monday after advancing to the next round of the Basketball Africa League qualifiers

JKL reached Dar on Sunday morning at 1AM and had training sessions at the Arena at Midday. They are residing at the National Hotel in Tanzania’s capital.

Beside the new additions, they will bank on captain Flavia Oketcho, Hope Akello, Rita Imanishimwe and Namuwaya Muhayimuna among others.
