*JKL 57-58 KPA
JKL Lady Dolphins squandered a 11-point lead to lose their first game at the ongoing FIBA Africa Zone five women club championship in Dar es Salam, Tanzania
The Dolphins lost 57-58 against Kenya’s Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).
Mandy Juruni’s side who came into the game on the back of an overwhelming 81-32 victory against Tanzania’s JKT, were on course for their second win but a third quarter collapse changed the course.
The Uganda’s representative led 12-8 after the first quarter, extended their lead with a 15-12 second quarter win to take a 27-20 lead at the long break.
In the third quarter, KPA turned on the heat, pressed at every opportunity and benefited from JKL’s reckless turnovers to win 18-9 and take a 38-36 lead going into the last quarter. JKL won the last 21-20 but it was just not enough as they lost a one-point game.
Akello Hope and Rose Akon had 10 points each but the team shot 24-59 from the floor, missed 16 free-throws and made 20 turnovers.
Mwangale Natalie scored 11 points, Selina Okumu and Betty Kalanga added 10 points each while Vilma Achieng contributed 13 rebounds as last year’s beaten finalists found their groove.
JKL, set to finish second if KPA beat JKT on Wednesday, will return to action on Friday against Pool A winners (Equity Bank) in the semifinal.
