Zone V: JKL Face Defending Champions In Crucial Semi

JKL Lady Dolphins will face Kenya’s Equity Bank Hawks in the semis of the 2019 FIBA Africa zone five women club championships on Friday in Dar Es Salam, Tanzania.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) will play Rwanda’s APR in the other semi, with the two finalists earning automatic tickets to the FIBA Africa Women Championship slated for December in Madagascar.

JKL, debutants at the tourney, eased past Tanzania’s JKT 81-32 but failed to hold on in their loss to KPA on Tuesday.

The side coached by Mande Juruni and Henry Malinga missed 16 free-throws, made 20 turnovers as they squandered a 11-point lead against KPA to finish second in a three-team group A team.

Equity on the other hand, got off to a flying start with a 96-39 win against Burundi’s Le Gazelles before overcoming Rwanda’s APR to book a top spot in group A that also had Tanzania’s Don Bosco

Equity are the defending champions after beating KPA 70-54 in last year’s final where Uganda’s UCU Lady Canons came third.

Coached by David Maina, Equity will be hoping for the best from Silalei Sheni, Ritah Onyango, Melissa Atieno, Samba Mjomba, Linda Akando, Betty Kananu, Annerose Mandela and Salma Akinyi among others.

JKL on the other hand – boasting with new additons in Zainah Lokwameri, Brenda Ekone, Sarah Ageno and Rose Akon – will be banking on cult heroes Hope Akello, Flavia Oketcho and off colour Rita Imanishimwe.
