Wakiso Giants beat Busoga United 2-1 to register their first win under caretaker boss Steven Bengo on a second league attempt.

The Purple Sharks, who lost first choice goalkeeper and captain Yasin Mugabi to an early injury, battled back from a 1-0 deficit to win at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium as they returned to winning ways in an emphatic fashion.

“I thank the management for the support and trusting me to take over this team as a caretaker in such hard times,” said coach Bengo who replaced sacked Kefa Kisala. “The players played well and am delighted with their performance. We plan to build from this great win for more.”

The hosts had lost three straight and the trend was set to continue when Abubaker Otwau headed in past substitute goalkeeper Derrick Emukule before the half hour mark.

Viane Ssekajugo leveled matters when, despite his lack of height, nodded in left back Simon Namwanja’s lofty cross at the stroke of halftime.

Karim Ndugwa, who replaced Geoffrey Sserunkuma midway through the second stanza, pounced in from close range what proved to be the winner after the ball ricocheted off the crossbar from Lawrence Bukenya’s thunderous strike.

The visitors had their moments but Boban Zirintusa, Dan Ssewava and David Bagoole all failed to beat Emukule in goal as Bengo’s army held on to their advantage.

The victory lifts Wakiso to 16 points, level with Busoga United who have a better goal difference.

This was Wakiso’s last home game in the first round – The side will visit Kyetume and Maroons.

Busoga United who have lost three in a row after previous defeats against Vipers and Kyetume have Maroons (H) and URA (A) to end the first round.
