“First of all I thank the Almighty God who has enabled us come up victorious, we started our campaign in February with the aim of reaching the semifinals because UCU hadn’t reached there in the last five years and when we reached the semifinals we had our dreams change because we have good players who are winners in the Masaza Cup and junior leagues,” said Were.
“I thank our former players at UCU because they laid the foundation for us. Advancing from the group stages to the quarter finals is no work done so we had to fight hard to reach semifinals but in the end we came up champions.
“I dedicate the championship to my mother in Luzira and father in Nsambya because they have been there for me when I wanted to quit education for football they advised me to do both and I’m dedicating this trophy to them given the fact that I’m soon graduating at UCU.”
Ezra Kaye scored a brace while Were was outstanding in goal as UCU were crowned champions.
“I admire like four clubs in the UPL with KCCA FC my dream team, KCCA FC is one team in Uganda that gives opportunities to young players like me. The way things run there are professional and one day I believe God will open my door widely.”
He also expressed his love for Vipers, Maroons because he grew up in Luzira and BUL FC.
Derrick Were also won the Masaza Cup with Ssingo under the tutorship of Coach Shafiq Bisaso.
