When Burkina’s Pitroipa Daggered Uganda In 2016

Uganda Cranes have arrived safely in Burkina Faso ahead of Wednesday’s 2021 AFCON qualifier.

The Cranes return to Burkina Faso after three years – March 26, 2016 – when they lost 1-0 in a similar qualification campaign.

Jonathan Pitroipa scored from the spot at the hour mark; sending Uganda goalkeeper Denis Onyango the wrong way, after he was fouled in the forbidden area by Khalid Aucho.

The Cranes, under Serbian tactician Sredejovic ‘Micho’ Milutin, tried to rally back but in vain.

Captain Geoffrey Massa headed in but his goal was disallowed when Egyptian referee Grisha Zaglol was convinced that he was offside. Farouk Miya and Tony Mawejje all came close.

Uganda slipped behind Burkina Faso after that loss then and only afforded a goalless draw when the sides met again few days later at Namboole in Group D.

However, Uganda managed to top that group and qualify to the 2017 AFCON in Egypt, breaking a 39 year old jinx, then.

Uganda’s team that faced Burkina Faso in 2016:

Starting Eleven – Denis Masinde Onyango, Denis Guma, Joseph Ochaya, Murushid Juuko, Isaac Isinde, Tony Mawejje, Khalid Aucho, Kizito Luwagga, Farouk Miya, Geoffrey Massa, Godfrey Walusimbi

Substitutes – Robert Ondogkara, Timothy Awany, Mike Azira, Hassan Wasswa, Hamis Kiiza, Moses Oloya.
