Christmas comes early as leaders Vipers make a short trip across the City to face defending champions and rivals KCCA FC on match-day 15 of the StarTimes UPL on Saturday at Lugogo.
The duel brings together the two title contenders and outright favourites for this season’s crown.
The league title has been won by either KCCA or Vipers for the past seven seasons since 2012/13.
2012–13 : KCC FC (Kampala)
2013–14 : KCC FC (Kampala)
2014–15 : Vipers SC (Wakiso)
2015–16 : KCCA FC (Kampala)
2016–17 : KCCA FC (Kampala)
2017–18 : Vipers SC (Wakiso)
2018–19 : KCCA FC (Kampala)
The much anticipated game which will be aired live on Sanyuka TV, finds Vipers on top of the log with 33 points and a win for Edward Golola’s charges may open up a 14-point gap from fifth placed KCCA who has played four games fewer.
The visitors will be without Captain Halid Lwaliwa and joint leading goalscorer Fahad Bayo as the duo is with the Uganda Cranes team to face Malawi on Sunday.
Karim Watambala and Bobosi Byaruhanga started their UACE Exams while first choice goalkeeper Fabien Mutombora left for Burundi for national duty.
Vipers managed to overcome URA FC at Kitende without the mentioned players but will have to double their efforts if they are to pick a positive result in an enemy territory.
KCCA will also miss Uganda Cranes trio of Charles Lukwago, Nicholas Kasozi and Allan Okello while Sadat Anaku will need a late fitness test.
Mike Mutyaba who has scored five goals for his club in the league this season will be carrying the team’s scoring burden in what promises to be a cracking affair.
“We have a responsibility to win this game,” said KCCA coach Mike Mutebi. “We are playing a team that has centered their case as an emerging force in Ugandan football. We want to front our case as defending Champions of the league. As a coach these are games you want to take part in and make sure the players display a good game of football for the fans to enjoy.”
Last season, Mutyaba cancelled Brian Nkuubi’s opener as the Lugogo encounter ended one all.
