Uganda’s Crested Cranes will face Tanzania in the CECAFA Women Cup semi final after falling to Kenya in their last group game.

Uganda lost her first game in the tournament to perennial threat Kenya in a game littered with defensive blunders from the Ugandan side.

The Crested Cranes had already booked her place to the knockout but wanted to top the group to avoid the wrath of facing Tanzania who are the hosts and defending champions.

Defenders Nankya Shadia and Bridget Nabisalu couldn’t produce the earlier performances in the first games as communication cost the team.

Aluka Grace who replaced Asia Nakibuuka in left wing also proved too slow for the quick and agile Janet Bundi.

Kunihira Magret provided Uganda’s threatening attack on goal but her sole effort went over the bar.

Kenya’s star player Mwanalima Jereko proved the difference, scoring a goal and dropping back to help defensively. Mwanalima’s goal arrived in the ninth minute before Mercy Ariko doubled the lead in the 18th minute before Jentrix Shingawa made it three from the spot at the death after Nabisalu handled the ball in the area.

Uganda will play Tanzania in the semifinal on Saturday as Kenya takes on Burundi.

Commenting about the game Kenyan coach David Ouma dismissed thoughts of winning the championship.

“It’s a bit early to think it’s going to Kenya, we play, we score and that’s not all we also have to maintain that Kenya storms final minus conceding a goal,” the coach added.
