Lawrence Bukenya: Up Close With Industrious Midfielder

Lawrence Bukenya is one of the young promising defensive midfielders in the Startimes Uganda Premier League, turning out for newcomers Wakiso Giants a side he joined on loan from KCCA.

*Background
Its every child’s dream growing up with their parents but this was never the case for Bukenya.

He grew up with his grandmother in Makindye after he left his parents who were residing in Nabbingo off Masaka road at the age of six.

*Football Background
At his little age, Lawrence Bukenya is one of the few Ugandans to have played in the CAF Champions League group stages.

“I never knew I will make it to this stage because I wasn’t supported to play football but I had to resist because I knew inside me I would make it one day,” Bukenya told the-SportsNation.com.

Bukenya started his football career way back with the Hampton Warriors Academy in Makindye at the officers Mess play ground before joining QPR academy were he found his best friend Peter Magambo Machete.

Its QPR academy that KCCA SA got to acquire his services and in 2017 got promoted to the KCCA FC senior team where he has won two Uganda premier league tittles, two Uganda cup trophies and the CECAFA Kagame Cup before joining Wakiso Giants On loan.

*Education Background
The composed midfielder began his schooling days at Nabbingo Nursery School before joining Kibuye Primary School were he found teammate Hassan Ssenyonjo.

He later joined Midfield high school on Entebbe road for senior one before joining Kawempe SSS where he re-united with his best friend Magambo for their O’Level.

In the Advanced Level, he went to Risah Academy were he met Maroons FC Forward Pius Obuya.

*Best Footballing Moments
For every footballer, their will be his best and worst footballing moments but when we met Bukenya he had to single out two moments.

“The day I won the Uganda Cup with KCCA and also walking away with the Most Valuable player in 2017 was my first of the many to come.

“My other unforgettable moment is when I came on as a subsititute in the caf Champions league at Namboole against Egyptian side Al Ahly.”

Dream

Donning the national colors is every young footballers dream and it’s no different with Bukenya who also wants to go proffesional at one stage.

He adds:

“Because I grew up in a poor family background, I want to build up a charity organisation to help the young ones and the needy.”

*Best Friend
Bukenya has a number of friends especially fellow footballers like Vipers’ Paul Willa, Maroons forward Pius Obuya, Julius Poloto, Peter Magambo, Mustafa Kizza and Philbert Obenchan and his teammate at Wakiso Giants Hassan Ssenyonjo.

However one who he would tell his inner secret is Magambo who he has spent most of years with in the football circles.

*Toughest Opponent

Maroons forward Pius Obuya is Bukenya’s nightmare.

“I am a big fan of Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas and it’s him that my friends and coaches call me Fab.
