Steven Mukwala has bounced back in the Uganda Cranes squad, replacing Edirisa Lubega, a day after he was cut off from the team preparing for the forthcoming 2019 CECAFA senior challenge cup.
Mukwala was among the four players dropped, alongside young goalkeeper Jack Komakech, Ivan Sserubiri (URA) and Wakiso Giants’ Hassan Ssenyonjo.
Mukwala replaces Proline striker Lubega Edirisa who Cranes coach Jonathan Mckinstry has confirmed to be injured.
“Lubega reported with an injury after taking a huge blow in a game against KCCA. He might have been okay but given that the tourney is going to be intense, we need to have players who are going to be fully fit,” explained the Northern Irishman.
“Mukwala has had a fantastic season with Maroons, top goalscorer in the UPL (after first round) and as we were starting to trim the squad, we had to trim the squad, we have 26 players and we have to get 20. There will be more good players who will not be selected.
“We are not losing any quality, Mukwala is a good player and he is happy coming back.”
Ben Ocen, Viane Ssekajugo, Joel Madondo, Fahad Bayo, Allan Kayiwa and Fahad Bayo are the other forwards on the team.
In similar developments, reports have it that South Sudan, Eritrea and DR Congo have pulled out of this year’s 2019 CECAFA tourney.
