Defending Champions Kenya Harambee Stars face dark horses Eritrea in the 2019 CECAFA senior challenge cup first semifinal at StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo.

Eritrea came second, despite falling to pool A winners Uganda Cranes; they picked seven points after victories against Burundi and Djibouti, sealing their semifinal spot with a goalless draw against rivals Somalia.

Eritrea coach Al Emseghed Haile said after booking the semifinal spot that it has been hard work and belief that has taken his team this far. He added that they expect the best in the semifinal and will continue pushing harder.

Playing an attacking, tik-tak game, the side will bank on attackers like Robel Kidane and Ali Suleiman Ibrahim to cause an upset.

Eritrea’s attacking game is expected to trouble Kenya’s organised defence led by Captain Joash Onyango.

Kenya on the other hand, welcome back coach Francis Kimanzi after serving his two game ban following events in their opening game against Tanzania.

The Harambee Stars topped pool B with maximum points, beating Tanzania, Sudan and Zanzibar.

“There’s nothing to be excited about my return,” Kimanzi told Daily Nation. “My hope is that the players are happier to be in the semi-final. Eritrea are at this stage of the tournament by merit and we are too.”

“Therefore we cannot afford to underrate them and we will give it our best shot.”

The defending champions will bank on Ulinzi Stars’ Oscar Wamalwa and Hassan Abdallah for goals – The duo have scored two goals in the tourney, each.
