Kathleen Noble: Uganda’s Rower Positive Ahead Of Tokyo 2020

In October 2019, Kathleen Noble went into Uganda’s history books when she became the first Ugandan to qualify for the Olympics in rowing, a fast growing sports discipline in the country.

Noble booked her ticket to Tokyo in a qualification event that was held in Tunisia where she finished among the top five who qualified in the single scull category.

One may think she is a ‘Muzungu’ by her skin color but she is a Ugandan by birth.

Her parents came into Uganda 26 years ago as missionaries and her father was providing health services to the people of Kiwoko hospital while the mother was a teacher in Kampala international school and later International school of Uganda.

When not in a boat, Noble is a laboratory technician specializing in cancers of animals.

Even though she describes Ugandans as welcoming people, she says that sometimes she feels left out as many think she is a tourist.

On how she started Rowing, Kathleen Noble reveals:

“I was very good at swimming but later while at university a friend of mine introduced me to the rowing sport which I later fell in love with up to now.”

She has represented Uganda in the 2016 world under 23 championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Recently, Batenga Nakisozi was elected as the interim president of the Rowing Association in Uganda after the assembly ousted Hamza Kahwa.

Noble describes the past regime as incompetent were “the athletes have been treated as young children, deceiving them on various occasions on issues concerning participation in international engagements and also lack of accountability” and she now hopes for the best in the new regime.

On the forthcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Noble says:

“I am geting enough time for training thanks to my current boss in Utah, USA were I am working from. I have put emphasis on gym work as many of the athletes and by July next year I will be ready.”
