Vipers managed to overcome Onduparaka FC in a closely contested affair in the StarTimes UPL at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

Captain Godfrey Wasswa scored the only goal of the game to give the Venoms their 14th victory of the season.

Wasswa curled home a beautiful freekick at the top right corner after Paul Mucureezi had been tripped outside the box in the 56th minute.

Onduparaka goalkeeper Yusuf Wasswa kept the score respectable after denying Rahmat Ssenfuka and Bobosi Byaruhanga.

“Its a big victory for us, and we want to keep this gap. They gave us a hard time but we took our chance and that was the big difference,” said goalscorer Wasswa.

Onduparaka’s best chance saw substitute Bheto Bashir’s poor effort, after a neat low pass from Jamal Malish, easily saved by Fabien Mutombora.

Vipers left back Farouk Musisi who started ahead of Aziz Kayondo rattled the crossbar off Mucureezi cross inside the opening minutes while the former Mbarara city player had his chance when Bayo headed his way only to volley into the side net.

The Venoms will feel lucky to end the game with all eleven men after Bayo, who was already booked, had a poor tackle against Rashid Mohammed.

The victory means Vipers have collected 46 points after 20 games, five above second placed KCCA who were beaten by URA FC on Friday in Bombo.

This is the first win for new coach Fred Kajoba, from as many games at Kitende, who introduced Allan Kayiwa, Abram Ndugwa and Tito Okello in the second half.

Onduparaka remain static in fifth with 30 points.
