Rookie Kizza Jonathan Relishes Cricket Cranes Opportunity

Young bowler Jonathan Kizza will target a permanent slot after his first senior national team call up on the Cricket Cranes.

Kizza, 20, who is a Kyambogo University student, is one of the eight debutants that will feature for Cricket Cranes in the forthcoming tour of Qatar and India.

He has featured for Uganda’s junior team, the Baby Cricket Cranes, and clubs like Nile and Africa Cricket Club.

The selectors have included Calvin Watuwa, Saudi Islam, Frank Ankwakasa, Trevor Bukenya, Robinson Obuya, Cyrus Kakuru and Gerald Mubiru.

“Its a big chance for me,” started Kizza. “Its an honour for the team to show trust in me and it’s now my turn not to disappoint.”

”I have been inspired by players like the the Waiswas who I have played with at club level and I want to give out my best.”

The Cranes will depart on February 8 and will be on tour until 26th.

This will be the first assignment for interim Coach Davis Turinawe who replaced former head coach Steven Tikolo.

“Kizza is a good player,” Coach Turinawe said. He is a good prospect who has pace and full of energy. We have included these youngsters because most of the players on the senior team are in the evening of their careers so we will want a smooth transition.”

Uganda will use the tour in preparations for the Africa T20 Cup slated for March 20-28 in Nairobi Kenya as well as the T20 World Cup Qualifiers that start in April.

Uganda will also host the second leg of the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge league B in July/August.

Uganda will fly to Doha to play three T20 games and two 50-over matches. The team will then proceed to Mumbai (India) for two 40-over matches before they head to Sanjay Farm’s Param Veer Cricket Academy in Chikhi, South Gujarat for four more games.

The three T20 games in Qatar have been approved as T20 International by ICC and the side will seek to improve on their 35th place in World rankings.
