Badminton: Minister Obua Officially shuttles Off Uganda International

Having completed the qualifying round on Thursday, the State Minister for Sport in Uganda Hamson Obua has on Friday officially opened the 15th Edition of the Uganda International Badminton Championship.

The ongoing event at Lugogo Indoor stadium has attracted about 177 players from 34 countries.

Obua, while giving his remarks, said:

“Hosting this event is a clear manifestation that Uganda sports industry has grown. It is not easy to host an International activity.”

“We have 34 countries here, we all know that Badminton is one of the Olympics games.”

However, none of Uganda badminton players will have a chance to play at the Olympics after featuring in fewer events.

“We will stand up and continue building players not only to qualify but also enabling to generate funds for their own and Country at large,” Obua responded.

Simon Mugabi, the CEO of Uganda Badminton Association, has blamed the failing of Ugandan Badminton players qualification for 2020 game to less privileges in Ugandan Sports.

“Athletes qualifying by accumulating points at International events but less funds failing them to take part in most of these International badminton events,” Mugabi explained.

“Players accumulating points in series 1700 points available, Championships 2500 points and Challenges 4000 points and the events are ranked according to Prize Money like in Championship like Uganda International there are 10,000 – 25,000 dollars for winners
While at Challenges there is 25,000 plus.”

The tournament’s climax will be on Sunday with Uganda banking on Brian Kasirye and Daniel Mihigo for a medal.
