Uganda’s Juliet Chekwel defied odds to win at the 36th Zurich Maratón de Sevilla on her debut.

Chekwel crossed the finished line in 2:23:13, fending off resistance from Ethiopian duo Gada Bontu and Sifan Melaku who came second and third in that order.

The achievement sees Chekwel qualify to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The 29-year old improved the course record by more than a minute. Her time took more than nine minutes off the Ugandan record.
