Basketball: Coach Sserunyigo Reveals Why He Joined KIU Rangers

KIU Rangers coach Rogers Sserunyigo is excited ahead of the new season that is set to tip off on Friday, March 20.

He was appointed the new KIU Rangers coach last month after a season with Uganda Martyrs University.

UMU will be coached by John Kiggundu.

“They were excellent girls,” Sserunyigo reflected on his stay at UMU. “I was just happy seeing the girls improve day by day.”

At KIU, his main task will be taking the team to the NBL finals after the side were beaten in the semis last season by JKL Lady Dolphins.

On why he joined the Kansanga based side, he revealed:

“KIU is near home and I’ve always checked on the team’s there going to the Coach Nimrod (Kaboha) days, so it’s a home team of may say.

“I was contacted by the FUBA president Nasser Sserunjogi to build a better team there as he thought I would do a great job seeing the work that I was doing with the UMU girl’s team and progress. He believes we can have a competitive team with more youthful players.”

Sserunyigo has also coached KCCA Leopards and Makindye Shooters. He will be targeting his first Women Championship after coming short with KCCA Leopards during his four-year stay.

“We have had about eight sessions. Am trying to get the girls to understand some concepts of the game that suit our Rangers team and they are responding positively.

“We will have a couple of friendly games in the coming weeks and probably appear for tourney’s to see how far we have gelled as a team. Most girls are playing together for the first time but the chemistry is coming along well. We should be ready to tussle it out by the beginning of the season. The ladies have been cooperative so far.”

KIU Rangers have confirmed three new signings at the club so far – Chantal Achieng, Perusi Namwenge and Chance Bagula.
