UPL To Consist Of 12 Clubs, FUFA Proposes

Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) wants to reduce Uganda Premier League (UPL) from 16 clubs to 12.

The proposals, revealed on FUFA Website, are to be implemented at the beginning of the 2021/2022 season.

The current format of 16 clubs in the top flight was introduced in 2011/12 season from 14 teams the previous season.

The new proposal will see six teams relegated at the end of next season (2020/21) instead of the usual three.

In addition, all teams will be required to have a team of U20 to play in the reserve league in the 2021/21 season.

The proposal also has it that the FUFA Junior league will be regional based.

“FUFA wishes to invite ideas from our stakeholders or from anyone “To Whom It May Concern” via [email protected] on the proposals as enumerated in this circular. These ideas and views shall be compiled and shall be debated on when FUFA organises the review workshop before the kick-off of the 2020/2021 season,” reads an excerpt on FUFA website.

Unlike in the current format where its a two-round affair, the proposed league will have three rounds; meaning KCCA FC will face Vipers thrice in a league for example.

With who to host the third leg criteria not defined, it is expected that a team with a better head to head record over the first two rounds, hosts the third leg as it is in the Women and Junior league.

This, according to FUFA, is intended to enhance quality of Clubs, increase Sporting Competition, improve Service delivery by Organizers, create better Club and League Brands, and increase revenues for both the clubs and the league.

According to the statement, the First Division, Second Division, the UPL U20 Reserve Leagues will be under the Professional League Board and Professional League Secretariat replacing the current UPL Board and UPL Secretariat respectively.
