Former Nigeria striker Daniel Amokachi says that defensive midfielder John Obi Mikel is the greatest player ever for Nigeria.
Amokachi made the remarks during an appearance on Nigeria radio Brila FM.
“Mikel is the greatest player,” said Amokachi who won the Africa cup of Nations with the Super Eagles in 1994.
“He has won everything that a player can hope to; the Champions League, Europa, AFCON in 2013 and he also captained the national team.
“As a footballer, your laurels count and that will surely count for Mikel because nobody has won that much in Nigerian football.”
Obi helped Nigeria to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and a bronze medal in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
At club level, with Chelsea to be particular, he has won the Uefa Champions League (2011/12), Uefa league cup (2012/13), Premier League (2) and FA Cup (3) among other titles.
He was named Chelsea young player of the year twice – 2007 and 2008.
He has had stints with Lyn, Tianjin Teda, Middlesbrough and Trabzonspor.
According to Wikipedia, Obi Mikel made his debut for the Nigeria senior team on 17 August 2005, when he came on as a second-half substitute in a 1-0 friendly win over Libya.
The Super Eagles have since the past produced some of the best players on the continent and world at large that include Vincent Enyeama, Sunday Oliseh, Stephen Keshi, Rashid Yekini, George Finidi, George Okocha and Nwanko Kanu among others.
