What Next For Uganda Cricket?

Just like other sports disciplines, Cricket’s major problems have been infrastructure, finances and governance – in whatever order. Covid19 has changed the song and all of a sudden, sport is fighting an invisible enemy.

Cricket remains uncertain of what the year 2020 will still be able to accommodate the day Covid19 pandemic will become a myth.

Many activities have been postponed while others have been scrapped off the calendar after the government directive that saw the ban on public gatherings put in effect.

Uganda Cricket Association says that “we are living on our toes” at the moment and are hoping that the scourge doesn’t take long.

The pandemic that has seen over 50 positive cases recorded in Uganda has left many sports administrators puzzled and will have to adjust the sporting calendar accordingly.

Mainly, Uganda is braced to host the Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League B in August and international Cricket Council, last month, said that they will be monitoring the situation to see if the tourney will go on.

“Obviously you can’t know at this point. The reason they said they will monitor is that they don’t know when the covid scourge will come to a halt,” said UCA CEO Martin Ondeko.

“So we are just hoping that it will end early way before August to allow for preparation as well.”

The Inaugural bilateral U19 women series is one of the few activities that had been cleared off the association’s calendar before the pandemic.

Ondeko says that there are a lot of uncertainties as the days continue to go by, with the Victoria series between Uganda and neighbors Tanzania, Kenya and Zambia unlikely to be held this year.

“Most of these activities depend on other stakeholders like the countries. We were supposed to have the ACA T20 Cup from 20th to 28th march but this was postponed,” Ondeko added.

“Basically, it’s difficult to tell what will be postponed or cancelled at this point. If we knew for example that the pandemic will end tomorrow, we would be in a good position to tell.

“But we plan to hold all activities at this point and will revise depending on the available time.”

Some of the affected activities include UCA girls schools cricket week (qualifiers and championship), UCA Women’s National League Division One and Two which was supposed to end by September.

Uganda Women team tour to Rwanda in June, a T20 league in October/November are some of the activities that may be unmoved, for now. There is still hope.
