Benjamin Ochan On Learning Karate, Uganda Cranes Return

Uganda’s shot stopper Benjamin Ochan is learning Karate as he steps up his train-at-home drills during the lockdown.

In an interview with Kenya’s Capital Sports, Ochan, who resides in Entebbe, revealed that he is being trained by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Barnabas Tusingwire.

He told Capital sports:

“Training Karate helps me work on my flexibility a lot. Karate is a whole world of adventure. Those guys do a lot of weird stretches and reflexes and it is so good for your body.

“As a goalkeeper, having good reflexes and good reaction is very key and this is what Karate is teaching me.

“Also, for self defence you know! Nobody can try rob me.”

The former KCCA FC goalkeeper plays for Kenya’s AFC Leopards, a side he joined last year after ending his stint with Kabwe Warriors.

He is a graduate of Kampala Kids League (KKL) and has had spells with Bloemfontein Celtic and Victoria University.

During the 2019 AFCON, Ochan did not make the Uganda Cranes squad to Egypt with Denis Onyango, Salim Jamal and Robert Odongkara filling the spots.

He remains positive for a call. He had a night to forget back in 2018 when Uganda lost to Zambia during the CHAN tourney held in Morocco when his howler gifted Fackson Kapumbu the third for Zambia.

“I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel bad after missing out on AFCON. It’s a dream for every player to play for the national team and I want to work hard to get back there,” Ochan added.

“It is tough because I am competing with very good keepers. Dennis (Onyango) is the best goalkeeper in Africa and you have to respect him and what he has done for the continent and Uganda. He is an inspiration to all of us and also a challenge to work hard and get to where he is.”
