Rwanda Ends League, APR Takes 18th Title

Federation of Rwanda Football Association (FERWAFA) on Friday ended football competitions “after thorough consideration on the unprecedented situation caused by Covid19 pandemic.”

The Rwanda Federation consequently awarded APR the 2019/20 league title for a record-extending 18th time.

This is the first title for APR since the 2017/18 season and the side will represent the country in the CAF champions League next season.

Rayon Sports (51 points) who had played 24 games, one fewer than APR, were six points adrift of the leaders on a 16-team log.

However, Ferwafa said in a statement that “Match-day 24 has been cancelled to clubs that had played these matches since it was not fully played.”

Heroes FC and Gicumbi with 16 and 15 points respectively have been relegated to the second division.

The league, formed in 1975, was suspended on March 15 2020 to stop the spread of the Coronavirus.

The Ministry of Sports later passed a decision this month to extend a ban on sports until September.
