Female Athlete Handed 12-Year Ban

Ethiopia marathoner Etaferahu Wodaj has been given a hefty ban of 12 years by Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

The 30-year old has been found guilty of using prohibited substance and for tampering with the doping control process.

The 12-year ban starts from November 20, 2019 when he was given a provisional suspension.

The report, from AIU, reads in part:

On 20 October 2019, the Athlete was subject to In-Competition Testing at the Waterfront Marathon1 in Toronto, Canada and provided a urine sample coded 4463110 (the “Sample”)

On 18 November 2019, the World Anti-Doping Agency (“WADA”) accredited laboratory in Montreal (the “Laboratory”) reported an Adverse Analytical Finding (“AAF”) for the Sample for the presence of recombinant EPO (“r-EPO”) and exogenous Testosterone and its metabolites 2, the latter
confirmed by IRMS analysis.

“R-EPO is prohibited under category S.2 (Peptide Hormones, Growth Factors, Related Substances and Mimetics) of the 2019 WADA Prohibited List and Testosterone and its metabolites are prohibited under category S.1 (Anabolic Agents). They are both Non-Specified Substances, prohibited at all times.”

The report adds that Wodaj did not have a Therapeutic Use Exemption permitting the use of either substance.

Wodaj finished third and eighth in the Ottawa and Toronto marathons (Canada) respectively in 2019.
